Back to the Future

While posting Bring Your Photography to Life about the talented photographer Tom Hussey and his award winning campaign with photographs of older people looking at the reflection of their younger self in a mirror, I remembered running across a similar project some place back in time.

I remembered Irina Werning and her cool project called “Back to The Future”, which I thought I had posted earlier. (?) But I can’t find it. Anyhow, it appears that Irina hasn’t stopped and have released a part II of the series.

The Argentina-born photographer, digs through old photographs of her subjects and then does her best to recreate the look and feel of the originals. Irina Werning scouts to find the same location and scours vintage stores to collect identical-looking clothing, in addition to analyzing the original photograph for its technical aspects, e.g. lighting, angles, exposure, in order to remake the scene to dizzying deja-vu effect. She also revisits her subjects years later as a kind of blast from the past documentary photography.

“I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… A few months ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future..by the way, this project made me realize I’m a bit obsessive…” says the artist.
